Let me set expectations up front, because travelers arriving from India or Türkiye brace for a bureaucratic fight that simply doesn’t exist here. In the U.S. there is no SIM registration, no tourist IMEI registration, and no internet censorship. You do not hand your passport to a telco. You do not wait hours for tele-verification. If you land at LAX with no plan at all, you can buy a prepaid SIM at an airport kiosk or a Target down the road in ten minutes, no ID required for prepaid.
So why bother with a travel eSIM at all? Two reasons. First, cost: roaming on your home carrier in the U.S. is one of the most expensive things you can do with a phone, and a travel eSIM undercuts it by roughly ten to one. Second, coverage: the U.S. is 3.8 million square miles, and outside the metros the network drops away fast. Why a travel eSIM beats roaming on your home carrier
The most expensive way to stay online in the U.S. is to do nothing and let your home carrier’s roaming kick in. Daily roaming passes from major carriers commonly run $10–$12 a day; a two-week trip can quietly cost $140–$170 in roaming fees alone before you’ve bought a single coffee. A travel eSIM for the same two weeks is often under $20. That is the entire reason this market exists.
The instinctive alternative — sign up for a U.S. carrier plan when you arrive — runs into a wall for visitors. A U.S. postpaid (monthly-contract) plan runs a credit check, which requires a Social Security number and a U.S. billing address. As a tourist you have neither. That leaves two visitor-friendly paths: a local prepaid SIM (no SSN, no address, no credit check — you just pay up front) or a travel eSIM. The prepaid route works but means an errand, a physical SIM swap, and losing your home number’s slot. A travel eSIM sidesteps all of it. You’re an inbound roaming subscriber on a line issued abroad, riding a U.S. host network (most travel eSIMs roam onto T-Mobile and/or AT&T). No account, no SSN, no store visit, no swap. For a trip of a few days to a few weeks, that’s the path I recommend to almost everyone.
Will your phone work? Bands, VoLTE and the Band 71 story
This is the section non-U.S. travelers skip and later regret. American networks are fast and modern, but they lean on frequencies that some Japanese, European and Chinese phones don’t fully support — and the gap only shows up once you leave the city.
Two things first. CDMA is dead — Verizon and the old Sprint network retired it, so an ancient phone that only worked on U.S. CDMA is a paperweight now. The real technical gate today is VoLTE (Voice over LTE): U.S. carriers have shut down 3G, so a phone that can’t do VoLTE may show data but can’t make normal calls. Any iPhone from roughly the iPhone 8 onward, and any mainstream Android from the last five or six years, handles VoLTE fine.
Then there’s the band that decides your rural experience: Band 71 (600 MHz), T-Mobile’s low-band frequency. Low-band travels far and punches through walls, so Band 71 is what carries T-Mobile’s signal across open country and deep inside buildings. Here’s the catch — Band 71 is the single most commonly missing band on non-U.S. phones. U.S.-market iPhones include it; recent global iPhones and unlocked Google Pixels generally support it; but plenty of Japan- and China-market Android models, and some older European handsets, omit it entirely. On those phones you’ll get great T-Mobile 5G in San Francisco and then watch it evaporate the moment you’re on a rural interstate. How to check in two minutes before you fly: dial *#06# to confirm your phone reports an EID (that means it’s eSIM-capable at all — some China/HK models still aren’t), then look up your exact model number’s supported LTE and 5G bands. If Band 71 (and its 5G sibling n71) is on the list, you’re set for rural T-Mobile. If it’s not, lean toward an eSIM that can roam onto Verizon or AT&T, which use 700 MHz and C-band for reach instead, and don’t count on signal in the deep backcountry.

The U.S. has exactly three national networks — Verizon, T-Mobile and AT&T — and understanding the trade-off between them tells you what to expect wherever your eSIM lands you. The short version: T-Mobile is the fastest, Verizon and AT&T reach further into rural America.
Per Ookla’s H2 2025 Speedtest data, T-Mobile was named the best mobile network in the U.S., with a median 5G download around 309 Mbps, overall median near 259 Mbps, and 5G latency about 44 ms — genuinely excellent numbers by world standards. But raw speed isn’t the whole story: on Ookla’s geographic coverage score, the order flips — Verizon leads on reach, AT&T is second, and T-Mobile third. That’s the whole tension. In and around cities, T-Mobile is fast and abundant; out in the rural West, Verizon and AT&T are more likely to have a bar. Whichever you choose, size the data to how much you actually stream. When does the U.S. Pass beat a data-only travel eSIM? Three cases. First, if you want truly unlimited data and can’t be bothered rationing a bucket. Second, if you want a working U.S. phone number for calls and texts to American businesses — a data-only eSIM won’t give you dialable voice. Third, if you’re spending most of your time in cities where T-Mobile’s speed shines. A data-only eSIM still wins on raw price and on keeping your home number as the primary line, but the U.S. Pass is the closest thing to a “just works, all-in” visitor plan the U.S. has ever offered.

Coverage by region — cities are easy, the rural West is the test
Major cities and the coasts
New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Miami, Seattle — blanket 5G on all three networks, often T-Mobile’s “5G UC” (the fast n41 2.5 GHz layer) in the densest areas. Subways and metros are increasingly wired for signal, though older tunnel segments still drop. This is where a T-Mobile-based eSIM feels fastest. You will not think about coverage here at all.
Interstates and road trips

Suburbs, indoors and small towns
Most small-town America is fine on all three networks, but indoor coverage in older buildings — thick-walled hotels, basements, big-box stores — is where low-band (Band 71 for T-Mobile) quietly saves you. If your phone lacks it, you’ll notice more “no service” moments inside buildings than a local would. Wi-Fi calling, which every U.S. carrier supports, is a useful fallback when a venue has decent Wi-Fi but weak cell signal.
Payments, tipping and the fact that nothing is blocked
Paying in the U.S. is card country. A contactless credit or debit card, Apple Pay or Google Pay is accepted almost everywhere — restaurants, gas stations, transit, taxis, tiny coffee shops. And the good news that matters most to travelers from censored markets: nothing is blocked in the U.S. There is no Great Firewall equivalent.
